13 Ways to Wear a Silk Scarf

A silk scarf is not one look. It is a 90 cm square that can finish a white shirt, cover a bad-hair day, turn jeans into an outfit, or become the top itself. These 13 ways to wear a silk scarf use the same piece — illustrated here with Arboreal Reverie, painted on paper in Toronto and printed on mulberry silk by Wenzi.

If you want full outfits rather than knot methods, see our 25 old money outfit ideas. For summer travel alone, try the shorter six summer ways.

1. Around the Neck — Classic

Fold once into a triangle or a soft band. Knot at the front of an open collar. Ends hang clean over a white shirt. This is the default office and museum knot.

2. Front Knot — Feminine

Same placement, tighter knot at the throat, shorter tails. Add sunglasses on the head when you want it to read “weekend in town.”

3. Side Knot — Quiet

Slide the knot off-centre against a black or navy sleeveless top. Less symmetrical, more intentional — the quiet-luxury version of a necktie.

4. Head Scarf — Retro

Triangle over the hair, knot under the chin. Blazer optional; sunglasses required. This is the Capri / convertible look. Full head-scarf notes in our silk head scarf guide.

5. Headband

Roll the square into a narrow band. Tie at the crown or nape and leave the hair down. Fastest way to make a plain sweater look finished.

6. In the Hair — Ponytail Wrap

Low ponytail. Wrap the scarf at the elastic and let the ends fall down the back. Works with a white sundress or a turtleneck.

7. Braid with Scarf

Weave a folded band through a low braid. Romantic without trying. Soft florals like Blossom Birds read especially well here.

8. Scarf Top

Triangle across the chest, knotted behind or at the side — a handkerchief bandeau. Pair with high-waisted trousers. Step-by-step in the silk scarf as a top guide.

9. On the Bag

Bow on the handle of a structured tote. Small dose of print when the neck should stay empty. Twillies from the skinny scarf collection also work for thinner straps.

10. On the Wrist

Wrap a narrow roll several times and knot. Soft alternative to a cuff; good with a fine gold chain.

11. On the Belt

Thread through jeans or trouser loops and knot at the front or side. Full method: bandana belt guide.

12. As a Choker

Fold very thin. Wrap close to the throat. Modern, minimal — best with an open collar or a clean crewneck.

13. Over the Shoulders

Light shawl drape, loose front knot over a tank or camisole. Evening terrace energy without a heavier wrap.
